powers and abilities
Feb. 24th, 2021 07:46 am Because I figured it would be a good idea to write it all down somewhere!
Edion
An Edion is a mostly-mortal individual born into one of several 'Holy Blood' bloodlines, sacred family trees bred to be perfect, oh-so-willing sacrifices for the Kayori gods. Edions are not demi-gods and do not themselves carry any divine blood; it would be better to call them god-touched. Each bloodline is 'sparked' by a specific AnKi (god/Source) and dedicated to that one god. An Edion cannot - or at least, should not - be sacrificed to a god not their own, since they are seen as the spiritual and literal property of their AnKi. The Kayori ordered a halt put to the Edion traditions on Keldra as part of their anti-sacrifice campaign, but at least in Naitan, one of the more deeply-hidden realms, the rituals have continued in secret.
Somewhere on their body, every Edion bears a birthmark in the shape of their AnKi's sigil. As one of the Oeiri - the bloodline dedicated to Vahlmir - Chimaera's godmark is the raven-and-crescent, a silvery-black mark with a sheen like mother of pearl.
Edions are bred for beauty and grace, and all have a particularly strong gift for magic and some elemental abilities. Unsacrificed, they can live for several hundred years, aging slowly, and are stronger, faster, and have keener senses than the average mortal. The shadow of their AnKi's power protects them a little from psychic attacks or persuasion (while making them more vulnerable to the same from their god), grants them low-grade tele-empathic abilities, and aligns them always to their AnKi's presence, should it manifest. It also gives them uniquely mutated energy fields, capable of 'opening' or 'blossoming' - gifting or feeding their energy directly to whomever they wish, most typically their god. They cannot feed on the energy of others.
The bond between AnKi and Edion is unbreakable and an intrinsic aspect of an Edion's genetic make-up; an Edion's physical and psychic nervous system lights up like a nebula in their AnKi's presence or at their touch. It's debatable whether an Edion's unshakable loyalty and devotion to their god is ingrained or a result of their sheltered rearing in hidden temples.
Chimaera's Edion-magic would be considered witchcraft by most worlds, and his elemental connection is to fire.
Time in Hell
The demons who kidnapped an Oeiri Edion from Naitan and forged him into an assassin fucked with his genetic coding. Chimaera's strength, speed and senses were all increased, he gained the ability to teleport (across continents, but not dimensions or worlds), and was 'gifted' with a very powerful healing/regenerative ability. Although he is as breakable as any other mortal - his bones are not reinforced, for example - he can heal most serious injuries within minutes, and is capable of regenerating lost limbs. This makes him functionally immortal, since he has stopped aging, but anything that would kill him instantly - decapitation, a bullet to the heart, an explosion, etc - will still kill him.
The most noteworthy of his Hell-forged adaptions are to his magic and metabolism. Originally born with a very light-aligned magic, his plummet into his own brand of insanity altered Chimaera's power; he draws his magical fuel from pain and typically works blood- or death-magic. More uniquely, after several decades of demonic experiments his magic now feeds into his physical metabolism; so long as he is fueled with pain, he doesn't need to eat or sleep, and can theoretically continue spell-casting indefinitely. Although there is a cap on the strength of spells he can cast, so long as he is hurt or hurting - physically, psychically, or emotionally - he cannot run out of fuel for his spells. For obvious reasons, this makes him extremely dangerous.
As a death-witch, Chimaera is able to 'death-walk', rendering him undetectable to all but the strongest of divine enchantments ('no one sees Death coming'). This requires him to physically straddle the line between death and life, usually accomplished by one of his own blades to the heart, and isn't something he can do without preparation or tools.
Finally, he has developed a 'psychic lockbox', a kind of pocket-dimension cupboard in which he stores items he may need in a hurry, such as his body-armour and weapons. Anything in the lockbox he can call to hand instantly, but it is a finite resource and the more he has in there, the more it drains him.
(It should probably also be noted that, while he is not capable of creating or maintaining especially powerful psychic shields, the unique composition of his un-sanity makes going through his mind like walking through a storm of broken glass; it can absolutely be done, especially by very powerful/skilled psychics and especially if he's co-operating with the process, but it is, to put it mildly, a health and safety hazard. You have been warned.)
